Dear Friends and Family,
I am raising money for the Multiple Myeloma walk on Sept 15, 2018 for my dear friend Robin Sully who I have known since our days at Goderich High School. She has had MM since 2013 and is best person to tell her story, here is an excerpt from her letter:
“When I was first diagnosed with MM I was told that the average life span of the disease was 5 years! Though not encouraging, I was determined to beat the odds. And here I am over 5 years later in much better shape than when I started on this journey. Amazing really! And I continue to do well on my current drug protocol. My cancer numbers have been reduced significantly with relatively few side effects. Unfortunately, the timeline for the effectiveness of the protocol is limited. I am hoping that new research and new drugs will be available to ensure that my current level of remission is sustainable. A cure would be perfect!
Meanwhile, I am actively involved in health advocacy, as Co-chair of the Ottawa Gatineau Myeloma Community Network, supporting patients and families in the region and Chair of the Ontario Advocacy Committee, working with government and coalitions of patient groups to advance access to new treatments for cancer patients in the province, including those with MM. It has been an exponential learning curve for me!
While research continues and promising drugs are on the horizon, MM remains a relatively unknown and incurable form of blood cancer. Supporting research and raising awareness of the disease is critical. Not only does this research immediately benefit MM patients (and I am an example!) but it contributes to our broader understanding of the causation and treatments for a variety of other cancers.”
Robin so far has done well on her current treatment but as she says, more research is needed. So I am asking you to support our Myeloma Matadors Team this year. Our goal is 18,000. The 2018 Ottawa-Gatineau Multiple Myeloma Walk…Steps to a Cure! fundraising goal is $85,000. Last year OG raised 65,000 and our Myeloma Matadors raised 16,000 thanks to your generosity.
