I found out about my multiple myeloma in January 2018 when my radiologist oncologist told me that I had lytic lesions in my ribs. Lytic lesions are specific to multiple myeloma and results in fractures. At the same time my bone marrow was comprised of 90% myeloma cells, placing me in a high risk category.
Prior to this date, I had 9 months of severe rib, sternal and lower back pain in addition to open cuts in the creases of my hands which never healed. I also experienced continuous fatigue. Since diagnosis, I underwent a stem cell transplant, the removal of a tumour on my spinal cord likely due from my myeloma treatments, and a Car-T clinical trial at Princess Margaret Hospital in August 2023. I am now in complete remission, getting blood work weekly and receiving no treatments for my myeloma. The average remission period post Car-T is two years. I hope and pray that it will be longer.
My platelets continue to remain critically low, limiting my exercise activities mostly to daily walks . I resumed bike riding only once this year so far, the first time since November 2021. I am looking forward to cycling more often beginning in May as I expect my platelets to improve.
Speaking of biking, last year Sudbury was one of six cities in Canada that participated in the Myeloma Canada Ride. Through the generosity of friends and family from our community and beyond, we were able to raise $34,000. This year our Myeloma Canada Ride: Bike to Beat Myeloma will take place on June 2nd. Our goal is to raise $30,000. I am hoping to ride the 24-25 km ride on June 2nd. I am very excited to be back in the saddle.
Multiple Myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer, yet it is relatively unknown and incurable. Every day, 11 Canadians are diagnosed.
Myeloma Canada is the only national charitable organization created by, and for Canadians impacted by multiple myeloma. The organization is driven to improve the lives of those affected by myeloma by empowering the community through awareness, education, and advocacy programs, and supporting research to find a cure. However, more funding and research are required.
I am appealing to you to consider registering and /or donating to my team "Bike with Bernd" or any other registered team for this worthy cause. Please use the following link to share freely with friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances:
