What a difference a year makes! At this time last year, Bernd was in the Intensive Rehabilitation Unit dealing with mobility deficits following his surgery for removal of a spinal cord tumor.
This year, he is walking, hiking and using his stationary bike, hoping to participate in Myeloma Canada's Ride to Beat Myeloma. However, due to low platelets from his new treatment, his oncologist has advised that his platelets must be 100 to participate. The normal is 150-400; last month, his platelets were at a critical 18, and with a reduction in his treatment dose, his platelets are now at 29. However, the reduced dose is causing his Free Lambda Light Chains, his marker cells for disease progression, to increase in value, an undesirable effect. Always the warrior, determined and positive Bernd remains hopeful to participate.
As a result of your support and generosity last year, Bike for Bernd won second place as the top fundraising team in Canada raising $18,452.00. This year, Sudbury was chosen as one of 7 municipalities across Canada to be part of Myeloma Canada's Bike to Beat Myeloma. Our community fundraising goal is $20,000.00
Multiple Myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer, yet it remains relatively unknown and incurable. Every day, 11 Canadians are diagnosed; in 2022, 4000 Canadians between the ages of 20-90 were told they have Multiple Myeloma.
Team Bike for Bernd humbly requests all of you to either participate and/or donate to this very worthwhile organization created by, and for, Canadians impacted by Multiple Myeloma. To find a cure, more funding and research are required. Thank you all for your support.
