Last year, in August 2024, my life was turned upside down when I learned that I had multiple myeloma. I didn't even know what that was. However, I was cared for right from the start by an extraordinary medical team here at the Ottawa General Hospital: I underwent chemotherapy treatments in the fall, followed by stem cell transplant with my own stem cells in January. I have been in full remission for several months now, so I am currently in the ?maintenance? phase. Despite all this good news, the disease will return. According to statistics, my life expectancy is about ten years. Twenty years ago, life expectancy was barely two years. Can you imagine...
