My first bike ride since November 2021
My first bike ride since November 2021

l was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in January 2018. My first line of treatment was an autologous stem cell transplant (using my own stem cells) in September 2019. This was followed by a second line of treatment in December 2019.

In March 2022, a meningioma tumour was removed from my spinal cord, requiring intensive rehabilitation for 10 weeks to regain my ability to walk. A second relapse in June 2022 required a third line of therapy to treat the MM, followed by a 4th line of therapy in April 2023.

In August 2023, I participated in a clinical trial at Princess Margaret Hospital called Car-T which put me into remission from my Multiple Myeloma.

In October 2024, another secondary blood cancer called MDS was discovered in a follow-up bone marrow biopsy. This cancer resulted from my previous therapies over the past 6 years. My only option for survival was to undergo an allogenic stem cell transplant using a non-related donor.

On February 25th, 2025 I received my new stem cells from a 10/10 donor match. I am now recovering with positive results and hopeful for a cure for both Multiple Myeloma and MDS. I remain most thankful and optimistic for this new lease on life.

This year Sudbury is one of nine cities in Canada that will participate in the Myeloma Canada Ride. Through the generosity of friends and family from our community and beyond, we were able to raise $25,000 in 2024 and $35,000 in 2023. This year our Myeloma Canada Ride: Bike to Beat Myeloma will take place on June 7th. Our goal is to raise $30,000. I am hoping to ride the 20 km ride depending on my recovery from the stem cell transplant.

Multiple Myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer, yet it is relatively unknown and incurable. Every day, 11 Canadians are diagnosed.

Myeloma Canada is the only national charitable organization created by, and for Canadians impacted by multiple myeloma. The organization is driven to improve the lives of those affected by myeloma by empowering the community through awareness, education, and advocacy programs, and supporting research to find a cure. However, more funding and research are required.

I am appealing to you to consider registering and /or donating to my team "Bike with Bernd" or any other registered team for this worthy cause.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering to support this phenomenal organization.
